Who Are We?

In 1987 the Dade Battlefield Society was created, a nonprofit volunteer organization whose purpose is the preservation an conservation of this battlefield. In order to raise public awareness of this tragic event, its causes and results, the Society works in many areas. Our major contribution continues to be the presentation each year of a full scale reenactment of Dade's battle.

A natural amphitheater has been built to provide a clear view for the audience. During the annual reenactment visitors may also walk through period soldier and Seminole encampments and talk to the reenactors.

In addition, the Society has recreated the log barricade built by the soldiers during the battle, silent testimony of desperate hours. We have also brought back to the battlefield a cannon and limber, an exact, full-size, functional reproduction of the one used during the battle. A thirty minute video, This land, These Men, tells the story of this tragic conflict. A shortened version of this film can be viewed by visitors to the Dade Battlefield Visitor Center. An officer's sword actually found on the battlefield is on display, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution. Another sword, a gift of a Society member, is a reproduction of the type worn by the non-commissioned officers of Dade's command. This sword, along with examples of Seminole clothing, gifts of the Seminole tribe, are used by the staff of the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in their interpretive programs. Historical information relating to every aspect of this battle, including the Seminoles, soldiers and slaves who struggled here, has been gathered and is available through the Society for research and study. A newsletter, The Ft. Armstrong Gazette, helps keep members informed of news, events and plans.

Join us. See the battle, relive a vital day in the history of Florida and the nation.
